In this day and age people often whine at the lack of “third spaces”—a place where they can spend time, hangout, learn or create without the expectation of spending money. Whenever I intrude on these conversations, it’s my belief that many people have forgotten about libraries. Most suburban libraries offer more than just books. You can borrow DvDs, magazines, games, CDs, audiobooks, etc. etc.

The City of Melbourne Libraries are a treasure trove of untapped creation in their Maker Space. 3D printers, sewing machines, overlockers, coverstitch machines, embroidery machines, Roland Cutter, laser cutters, soldering stations, how to booklets etc. etc.

You can easily spend your whole day there either sewing, 3D printing, or reading a how-to booklet on how to make a key chain. If you get stuck you can always ask the library staff for help. With their guidance, I printed out Grace from Project Hail Mary.

Getting access is straightforward. You just need to complete the safety induction online and then an in-person orientation of your preferred space. If you want to visit a new Makerspace location, you need to book in for an in-person orientation for that space as well.     

If you’re looking for a third space, your local library might be offering far more than you realise. I recommend checking the Maker Space’s opening hours before you go, so you don’t arrive when it’s closed.
