How to Make a “Saviour of the Universe” Hat for Your Rocky Plush

Hi my followers, today I’m going to show you how to make a “Saviour of the Universe Hat” for your Rocky plush that I showed you how to make in an earlier blog post.

Tools:

  • Dressmaking scissors
  • Paper scissors
  • Doll needle
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Ironing board
  • Vinyl cutting machine
  • Pins

Materials:

Step One. 

Download and print the hat pattern from the materials list, then cut it out.

You may notice that the pattern shown in my photos looks slightly different from the official version I’ve supplied. Instead of printing the pattern, I used an A4 sheet of paper and hand-drew the straight-of-grain line and notches. Once I pinned the paper pattern to the fabric, I added the seam allowance around it before cutting.

If you prefer not to print the supplied pattern, you can use this method instead.

Step Two. 

Lay out your fabric and place the pattern on top. Cut out two fabric pieces, remembering to add the seam allowance if it is not already included in the pattern.

Make sure to transfer the pattern markings onto the fabric. You can do this by carefully snipping the notches into the seam allowance or marking them with a fabric marker.

Using the same pattern, cut out the fusing as well, again adding the seam allowance if needed.

Step Three.

Iron the fusible interfacing onto the wrong side of the fabric. Make sure the shiny, adhesive side of the interfacing is facing down against the fabric before pressing it in place.

Step Four. 

Place the right sides of the fabric, make sure the notches are matching and pin in place. Starting at lower notch, sew around the edge of the fabric together with the white thread all the way around to the next notch, leaving the sections between the notches open. When you’re done you should have an opening big enough to fit your hand through.

Trim the corners of the fabric and turn inside out. To get crisp edges I suggest poking them out with a popsicle stick or for the more experienced the pointed ends of your scissors.

Step Five.

Iron the fabric flat. Top stitch the area between the notches the fabric so the hole is completely closed.

Step Six.

Iron the fabric and fold half length-wise from the notch at the top the pattern to meet the bottom of the other notch.

Unfold and take the top corners and fold them so they meet in the middle. Flip the bottom flaps of the hat up and press the fabric down. 

Step Seven.

Unfold the bottom flaps and bring the two middle sections together. They should overlap slightly. Take the piece to your sewing machine, gently scrunch the bottom fabric out of the way, and sew the overlapping middle sections together.

Step Eight.

(Before completing this step, check how strong and resilient your fabric is, as too much pulling or pressure may cause it to tear.)

Thread your doll needle with a good amount of yarn. Flip the bottom flaps upward, then pinch the edges of the top corner together.

Insert the needle between the folds of the fabric and pull it through, keeping the knot hidden inside. Sew through the corner and bring the needle back around to where you started.

You should now have a visible loop of yarn. Pass the needle through this loop and pull it tight so the remaining yarn gathers together at the corner. Tie the yarn securely, then cut the ends to create the tassel.

Repeat this process at the lower fold, then repeat both steps on the opposite side.

Step Nine.

Iron on your words that you’ve printed and any stars you want to include. If you don’t own a Vinyl printer check if your local library has a makers space to print yours out. Remember to check out the requirements that you need to fulfil to use this space.

Step 10.

Repeat Step 8. for the tip of the hat.

Step 11.

Enjoy the fruits of your labour.
